Hummingbird

The hum of wings

mid-air pause

hovering

my quick gasp of breath

at the sight

of the brilliantly colored throat

swift flight

eyes darting furtively

eyes that perceive

the smallest motion, a breath

In another time

other birds

have worshiped

at the brim

of massive orange trumpet vines

now becoming

folio sheets torn

from life’s old scrapbook

far away from

this place with its busy side street

murmuring memory banter

interweaving into

a symphony of honeysuckle

  1. We don’t have hummingbirds in this part of the world Lana, sadly. They seem such amazing little creatures it doesn’t surprise me that most everyone who does have them is in love with them. Even though I’ve never seen one in the flesh, I thought the first seven lines conveyed both the sight and surprised delight at seeing them perfectly.

  2. Love this: “other birds / have worshiped / at the brim / of massive orange trumpet vines.” I just saw a hummingbird a day or so ago, first one of the season, hovering near our magenta rosebush. They love those brightly colored flowers. 🙂

  3. Beautiful! “A symphony of honeysuckle” just perfectly combines all the lovely senses and impressions your poem evokes, Lana! I saw a hummingbird once in Granada in Spain and was mesmerized! So beautiful! And so fast! It was gone before I even got hold of my camera! 🙂 ❤
