Arts and Blessings

Bless you, I say

to the boy practicing

his Cordoba parts

sneezing in the midst of

guitar class

and goddess worship.

Chord progression fuses

veers off into

AC/DC and the Stones

“….painted black….”

Music beating down

the day’s static monotony

overflowing into the halls

invading art class

prodding tomorrow’s poetry gurus

to mourn after

Monet’s landscapes

or Dominguez’s history

And a little Deep Purple

then the 6 o’clock news

harks of the demise

of the National Endowment for the Arts

and the National Endowment for the Humanities

All we are are dust….”

and I wonder

where do tiny blessings fly

when the world drifts dark?

  1. A timely and thought-provoking poem, Lana. Reminded me of a poster I saw earlier today at the library, touting arts and creativity as an anti-drug program. Sorry, got a photo of it but cannot figure out how to paste it here. 🙂

  2. The arts are a gift to any school and a joy to the students and the audience. There are so many cutbacks in education at the moment in the UK so no doubt the funding for the arts which is low anyway will be hit hard. You really capture the essence of a school, the mixture of classes well, Lana.
