Driving Lessons

When the clutch fails

on a vintage red convertible

merging on the freeway

you’ll have to pull over

for awhile

at the mercy of the odds

take shelter on a grassy knoll

in a deserted business park

and reflect

that objects in the mirror

are definitely closer than they appear

maybe decide right there

in the crisp, night air

in all your glorious vulnerability

that you don’t want to be left clutching

at relationships that don’t work

at doing and getting it all

at the clutter clouding your existence

clutching at hope, half-broken dreams, failed escape routes

rather clutch

a strong arm

a peace sign for coexistence

a dreamy pillow of forgiveness

a soft purring feline

Maybe it is time to sell that car

and take the bus…
